Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Noamen Rebai Professor at “École Nationale d'Ingénieurs de Tunis”, Tunis El Manar University responsible for the Specialized Master's degree in Geomatics.

PROJECTS

  1. Greenhouse Gas Emission Report
GHG Report of UTM of the year 2022 and Baseline year 2016.
    GHG Emission Report 2022
    Carbon Emission Policy

Sustainability is the balance between the economy, equity, and the environment. The UTM approach is to ensure development without compromising the quality of life of current and future generations by acting in an economically, environmentally, and socially responsible manner. Our ambition is to adopt ESG principles to develop a sustainable and eco-friendly campus that ensures efficient use of materials, space, and energy, and promotes the well-being of employees and students. Our approach focuses on three pillars: operation, awareness, and research.

  2. Med-EcoSuRe Project (2019-2023)
Innovative approach for cost-effective energy renovation in university buildings. Establishes a Mediterranean cross-border living lab for energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions in 9 university buildings.
  3. MAR2PROTECT
Holistic approach to prevent groundwater contamination from climate change impacts. Features an AI-based Decision Support System to improve groundwater quality and quantity. Tunisian partner ISSBAT (UTM) focuses on tertiary treatment of aquifers in Cap Bon Peninsula.
  4. Photovoltaic Panels at ENIT
    Implementation at ENIT, September 2023.
  5. Tunisian-Bavarian Hub for Green Hydrogen
Hub implementation at ENIT (UTM) to promote research and develop top-notch green hydrogen technologies.

Conferences & Research Activities

PhD & Master Research

Climate Impact on Marine Intrusion
Assessing the impact of climate change on Lake Ichkeul, an 8500-hectare (85 km²) natural reserve in northern Tunisia. Using the MOHYB hydrodynamic model (1D numerical approach), this research investigates lagoon exchange through the Tinja River, the influence of tides, and environmental parameters such as water inflow, wind stress, evaporation, precipitation, river inputs, water and air temperature to simulate lagoon hydrodynamics. The study highlights the impact of fresh continental water inflow during winter and saltwater inflow from Bizerte Lake in summer, capturing the lagoon’s complex response to environmental changes.

Intelligent System for Environmental Monitoring
This thesis project develops AI-powered systems for environmental monitoring and contamination risk assessment in the Bizerte Lagoon, an area under high anthropogenic pressure. Leveraging the BLHAJ2030 model for water quality and the OP-LSTM model for predicting sediment contaminants, the system integrates 22 years of geochemical data (2002-2023) with GIS tools to monitor pollutants in real-time and evaluate groundwater recharge potential.

Innovation Competition

  • Shell Eco-Marathon
ENIT ECOCAR participated in the international competition “Shell Eco-Marathon” on June 30th, 2022, and ranked 18th worldwide with a score of 222 KM/L.
  • National Competition INJAZ Tunisia – 14th edition “The Entrepreneurs of the Future”
The team Supclay won the Best Young Company Award for their product, Clay-based cement, an environmentally friendly alternative to Portland cement. They will represent Tunisia at the regional competition in November in Qatar.

Training

Training IA, Climate Change & Geomatics
Training for the application of IA in studying Climate Change & Geomatics, held November 2nd, 2023, in the context of the international congress of the same thematic.

Workshops

  • Workshop GREECON
“GREECON” workshop for ecological construction, organized in ENIT (UTM) by Civil Engineering Club, 3Zeros Club, and IEEE ENIT Branch, February 2nd, 2023.
    Facebook Post
  • Workshop IA, Climate Change & Geomatics
As part of the international congress “ISEE Geomatics” held October 30th, 2023. Professionals and researchers conducted workshops on Geomatics and Climate Change.
    Conference Program

Fieldwork

Field Visits
Monitoring and survey of climate change impact for students of the Civil Engineering department of ENIT (UTM) to Korba, Nabeul (2023).

Management of Littoral to Climate Resilience
Observation of “Ganivelle” to reduce the vulnerability of the beach of Korba, Tunisia.

Ganivelle: Wooden fences set up to preserve the dunes. The Ganivelle project aims to prevent the dispersal of beach sand by forming embryonic dunes that resist storms and other environmental impacts due to climate change.

Club Activities

Launched in October 2022, this club is present in 17 universities and is dedicated to promoting the 3Zero initiative: Zero exclusion, Zero carbon, Zero poverty. The club aims to create a sustainable campus by working towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
