Policy on Maternity and Paternity Leave -University of Tunis El Manar (UTM)
The University of Tunis El Manar (UTM) is committed to fostering a family-friendly environment by supporting its employees in balancing work and family life. This policy outlines the provisions for maternity and paternity leave for biological, adoptive, and surrogate parents, aligning with Tunisian labor laws and UTM’s commitment to inclusivity.
Maternity Leave
Eligibility
- Female employees with a minimum of six months of continuous employment at UTM are eligible for maternity leave.
Duration
- Eligible employees are entitled to 110 days (approximately four months) of fully paid maternity leave.
- The leave period may be extended in case of complications or medically certified conditions requiring additional recovery time.
Compensation
- Maternity leave is fully paid, in accordance with Tunisian labor law.
Extended Parental Leave
- After completing maternity leave, employees may apply for up to six months of unpaid parental leave.
- Approval for extended leave is subject to departmental needs and requires coordination with the employee’s supervisor.
Job Protection
- Employees are guaranteed reinstatement to the same or an equivalent position with the same terms and conditions upon their return from maternity leave.
Paternity Leave
Eligibility
- Male employees with a minimum of six months of continuous employment at UTM are eligible for paternity leave.
Duration
- Eligible employees are entitled to 15 days of fully paid paternity leave.
Additional Parental Leave
- Fathers may request up to three months of unpaid parental leave, subject to departmental approval.
Job Protection
- Employees returning from paternity leave are assured reinstatement to their original or an equivalent position.
Provisions for Adoptive and Surrogate Parents
- Maternity and paternity leave are equally applicable to employees adopting a child or welcoming a child through surrogacy.
- Adoptive parents benefit from the same leave entitlements as biological parents, ensuring inclusivity and equity.
Procedure for Leave Application
- Employees must submit a written request for maternity or paternity leave to their department head at least 30 days prior to the expected leave date, except in cases of emergency.
- Documentation supporting the request, such as a medical certificate or adoption papers, must be provided.
- Parental leave extensions must be requested in writing at least 15 days before the end of the maternity or paternity leave period.
