Reduce the use of plastic and paper
Reduce the use of plastic
The University of Tunis El Manar has defined a policy to provide a guideline to ensure best practices to reduce the use of non-biodegradable plastic products and papers on campus and to commit to environmental sustainability and provide a model for the community.
- Implement an effective management strategy to reduce plastic bag consumption and waste.
- Promote alternatives to single-use plastic bags, for example, biodegradable single-use plastic bags, recycled materials, paper or fabrics.
- Support innovative opportunities for recycling plastic waste.
- Support community initiatives to eliminate plastic waste from the environment.
- Policy, accountability and evaluation
- The University will develop indicators and measures of success in the implementation of this policy.
- A committee formed by the president will provide an annual report to the university council on the process towards the established indicators and the measurement of the plastic policy.
Reduce paper use
The University uses millions of sheets of paper each year; much of this is wasteful and has a huge impact on the environment. Since 2018, we have started using recycled paper at the University. There are a number of measures implemented on campus to reduce the amount of paper used on campus:
- Keep it on screen – think before you print and only print when absolutely necessary.
- Print on both sides – double-sided printing should be the default on most printers, but check before you print
- Where possible, hold paperless meetings and juries. Make sure participants know that information will be shared electronically.
- If possible, print more than one page per sheet to reduce the number of pages printed.
