Climate Change and environment
The University of Tunis El Manar (UTM) follows very detailed indicators to ensure that sustainability and social responsibility requirements are respected and addressed in a clear and transparent way throughout our teaching, research and development activities. We adopt a continuous, iterative and inclusive approach to implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (17SDGs of the UN) in all our university’s activities.
Sustainability Policy
Sustainability is the balance between the economy, equity, and the environment. The UTM approach is to ensure the development of our activities without compromising the quality of life of current and future generations by acting in an economically, environmentally, and socially responsible manner. Our ambition is to adopt the ESG principles to develop a sustainable and eco-friendly campus that ensures efficient use of materials, space, and energy, respect, and promotes the well-being of the employees and students on the campus. Our approach is to focus on three main pillars: operation, awareness, and research. Operation:
- Monitor and evaluate energy and water consumption.
- Implement energy efficiency and green buildings actions to reduce carbon emissions
- Invest in renewable energy.
- Protect biodiversity.
- Ensure responsible use of natural resources.
- Ensure a good working environment.
- Respect the national laws and standards.
- Create a cultural, social, and sports complex an environmentally friendly area that offers the students and UTM staff access to different cultural, social, and sports activities.
- Ensure the diversity and respect of human rights.
- Highlight the effective role of UTM in the development of green and sustainable construction and environmentally friendly infrastructure, in line with the standards of the Global Classification to support the SDGs
Establish UTM-Ecological and Sustainable (green infrastructure, zero papers, zero plastic, zero emissions 2030, zero Carbon 2050) Awareness: • Raise awareness about the impact of climate change and encourage energy and sustainability best practices. Communicate the importance of responsible day-to-day actions to ensure a better life for current and future generations. • Include sustainability topics in the study plan. • Establish programs that promote sustainability development frameworks and goals. Research: • Promote research that focuses on protecting the environment, the objectives of Sustainable Development, and improving the quality of life. • Invest in studying new sustainable technologies.
Networking: Our university is an active member of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and has recently become a member of the International Universities Climate Alliance and The Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) through researcher at the Borj Cedria Research Centre, Tunisia Details of a selection of projects and plans are provided in the links below:
