UTM first in Tunisia in the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026

The University of Tunis El Manar (UTM) is placed in the 101-200 band of the overall table of the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, according to THE’s profile of the university. Tunisian press, including African Manager, reports that UTM is the first Tunisian university in the table.

THE released the 2026 results in June 2026. This is the eighth annual edition of the exercise previously called the THE Impact Rankings. THE ranks 1,646 unique institutions from 116 countries and territories across 18 tables: one overall table and one table for each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Where UTM stands overall

THE shows positions beyond the top 100 as bands, such as 101-200, rather than exact ranks. African Manager lists the other Tunisian universities in the 2026 overall table as Sfax (601-800), La Manouba (801-1000), and Gabes and Tunis (both 1001-1500). It also reports that UTM kept the same position as in the previous year.

For scale, the overall table is led by the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, which ended a four-year run at the top by Western Sydney University.

UTM in each SDG table

THE’s profile of UTM lists a position in all 17 SDG tables. The table below reproduces these positions and links each goal to UTM’s 2026 report page on this site.

Four results are inside the top 100 of their tables: SDG 5 (joint 48th), SDG 9 (joint 51st), SDG 8 (56th) and SDG 3 (joint 70th). La Presse reports that UTM stands out in industrial innovation, health and gender equality, which are SDG 9, SDG 3 and SDG 5.

How to read these results

An SDG position and the overall position are different things. THE builds the annual score from SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) plus the three other SDGs where a university’s scaled score is highest. Those three are not necessarily the SDGs where the university is ranked highest, and THE does not publish which three it used for a given university. The overall score also averages the 2025 and 2026 annual scores. The article How the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 work explains the method.

Earlier editions

UTM took part before 2026. UTM’s own press release reports a place in the global top 400 in the THE Impact Ranking 2020, and the press reported the same band for the 2021 edition, which covered 1,115 universities from 94 countries. THE’s current profile lists only the 2026 result, so this article compares no earlier SDG positions.

Where to read about UTM’s work for each goal

The ratings are one view of UTM’s work. The 2026 SDG reports on this site describe, goal by goal, what UTM’s faculties, schools, institutes and laboratories did. They are UTM’s own publications and are separate from THE’s scoring, which rests on data and evidence that universities submit to THE. The teams behind each goal are presented on the SDG ambassadors page.
