The University of Tunis El Manar (UTM) is a public, multidisciplinary university. It was created in 1987 as the University of Sciences, Technologies and Medicine of Tunis and has carried its current name since 2000. A UTM presentation describes it as including the oldest academic and research institutions of Tunisia. The figures below come from UTM’s official key figures page.

Establishments
According to the French-language Wikipedia article on UTM, the 15 establishments are four faculties (Law and Political Sciences of Tunis; Economics and Management of Tunis; Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Tunis; Medicine of Tunis), two schools (the National Engineering School of Tunis, ENIT, and the Higher School of Health Sciences and Techniques of Tunis) and nine institutes.
The institutes include the Institut Pasteur de Tunis, the Veterinary Research Institute and the Bourguiba Institute of Modern Languages. The other six are the higher institutes of Human Sciences, Medical Technologies, Computer Science, Applied Biological Sciences and Nursing Sciences, and the Preparatory Institute for Engineering Studies of El Manar.
Programmes and research
UTM’s key figures page lists 98 master’s programmes with 129 tracks, 25 doctoral programmes, 53 bachelor’s programmes, 22 engineering programmes and 9 engineering preparatory cycles. It also lists 19 university habilitations, 56 departments and nearly 200 national diplomas.
On research, the page reports 304 theses defended in 2024-2025 and about 870 research master’s theses defended per year on average. The 106 research structures are the 102 laboratories and 4 units shown in the table above.
Mission and legal basis
UTM’s missions and objectives page states that its organisation rests on law no. 2008-19 of 25 February 2008 on higher education and decree no. 2008-2716 of 4 August 2008. Its specific missions include promoting good governance, assuring the quality of programmes and degrees, placing the student at the centre of the university, improving UTM’s visibility and giving UTM a sustainable development strategy.
International cooperation
UTM hosts students from 35 nationalities. The page counts 163 framework agreements and 40 specific agreements. Cooperation with partner institutions appears throughout the goal reports on this site, for example under SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals.
Reading the figures
The page gives the student count for the 2025/2026 academic year and the thesis count for 2024-2025. The other figures appear on the same page without a separate year. All of them change from one year to the next, so this article should be read as a snapshot of the official page rather than a permanent record.
Ranking organisations build their own data sets and may show different student or staff numbers on their university profiles. This site uses UTM’s own figures. The same key figures introduce the 2026 SDG reports, where the student count is rounded to about 29,600.
